Water Sort Puzzle Tips: How to Solve Color Sorting Levels in Fewer Moves
How to solve water sort puzzles: the pouring rules, keeping an empty flask, planning from the bottom layers and using undo to find shorter solutions.

In a water sort puzzle you pour coloured layers between glass flasks until every flask holds a single colour. The rules take ten seconds to learn — liquid can only be poured onto the same colour or into an empty flask, and a flask can only hold so many layers — but harder levels need real planning. These tips will help you solve them in fewer moves.
The rules
- Tap a flask, then the flask you want to pour into.
- The top layer can only land on the same colour or in an empty flask.
- A flask cannot overflow: you pour only as much as fits.
- The level is solved when every flask holds one colour (or is empty).
A worked example: five moves, one empty flask spare
Here is a real starting position, Level 1 of Flask Fiesta. Reading each flask from bottom to top, with four layers per flask:
- Flask 1: red, red, yellow, yellow
- Flask 2: red, yellow, yellow, blue
- Flask 3: blue, blue, blue, red
- Flasks 4 and 5: empty

- Pour the two yellows from flask 1 into flask 4. Flask 1 now shows red on top.
- Pour the red from flask 3 onto flask 1. Flask 3 is now three blues.
- Pour the blue from flask 2 onto flask 3 — four blues, sorted.
- Pour the two yellows from flask 2 onto flask 4 — four yellows, sorted.
- Pour the last red from flask 2 onto flask 1 — four reds, sorted.
Five moves, and flask 5 was never touched. Notice the pattern: the first pour used one empty flask to lift a colour out of the way, and every later pour either finished a flask or set one up. That is the whole game in miniature.
1. Keep an empty flask for as long as possible
An empty flask is your most valuable tool. It lets you lift a layer out of the way and reach the colour underneath. Avoid filling it with a colour unless that move finishes or nearly finishes a flask.
2. Look at the bottom layers
The top colours are easy to see, but the bottom layers decide the puzzle. Plan which flask each colour will end up in by looking at what sits at the bottom of every flask.
3. Finish flasks that are almost done
If a flask holds three layers of the same colour and one different layer on top, freeing it and topping it up completes a whole colour — and every completed flask simplifies the puzzle.
4. Pour whole groups
When two or more matching layers sit on top of a flask, they pour together. Moving a group in one go saves moves and keeps your flasks tidy.
5. Avoid "burying" a colour
Pouring a layer onto a nearly finished colour of a different flask can trap that colour under a new layer. Before pouring, ask whether you are covering something you will need soon.
6. Use undo to learn
When a level goes wrong, undo the last few moves and try a different first pour. Undo is the fastest way to discover the order a tricky level wants.
7. Plan for hidden layers
Some water sort games hide the lower layers until they reach the top of a flask. When you can't see everything, prefer pours that reveal a hidden layer early, and keep an empty flask free a little longer than usual — you don't yet know which colour it will need to hold.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | What happens | Better habit |
|---|---|---|
| Filling the empty flask with one stray layer | You lose your best tool | Only use it when it helps finish a flask |
| Pouring onto a nearly finished flask of another colour | That colour is buried again | Check what you are covering |
| Splitting a group of matching layers | Extra moves to bring them back together | Pour whole groups where they fit |
| Playing the top layers only | The bottoms decide the ending | Read every flask from the bottom up |
Sort potions for free
Flask Fiesta is our free colour-sorting puzzle in a glowing lab: help Dr. Ada sort her fizzy potions across a 72-level journey in six lab chapters, race the clock in Speed Lab or solve the daily lab. Undo is free, Hint shows a good pour, and fewer moves earn more stars.
Here is how these water sort puzzle tips fit its rules:
- Four layers per flask. Every flask holds four layers, so "three of a colour plus one stray on top" is the classic nearly finished flask.
- Stars for efficiency. Match the target move count for three stars; finishing within about a third more earns two. Replaying a level after solving it is the easiest way to find the shorter route.
- Hints and undo. Undo and Restart are always free and unlimited, and you get three free hints per level that show the next good pour.
- An extra flask when stuck. Once per level you can add an empty flask, but it caps that level at two stars, so try undo first.
- Harder labs. Levels add more colours as you go, and from level 30 some levels hide the lower layers until they reach the top.
- Speed Lab. A timed mode where each solved lab adds 12 seconds, with Undo and Restart only — good practice for spotting the right pour quickly.

FAQ
How do you solve a water sort puzzle?
Pour the top layers between flasks so that matching colours stack together, keeping one flask empty as long as possible to move layers out of the way. Plan from the bottom layers, finish nearly complete flasks first and use undo when you get stuck.
Can you pour onto a different colour in water sort?
No. Liquid can only be poured onto a layer of the same colour or into an empty flask, and only as much as the receiving flask can hold. If the target has room for only one of two matching layers, the second stays behind in the original flask.
What do you do when you are stuck in a water sort level?
Undo a few moves and try a different first pour, look for a flask you can empty, or use a hint. In Flask Fiesta a retry can also add an extra empty flask. That makes most levels much easier, but it caps the level at two stars, so try undo and a fresh plan first if you are chasing three stars.
Is Flask Fiesta free to play?
Yes. Flask Fiesta is free on GamesYap and runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers with no download. All 72 journey levels, Speed Lab and the daily lab are free, and coins you earn only unlock lab themes that change the look of the lab.
