Idle Tycoon Game Tips: Spot the Trap Card and Build an Empire
Idle tycoon game tips for Broke to Boss: tell assets from liabilities, handle upkeep and energy, survive bankruptcy and grow from a mattress to Mars.
By GamesYap Team6 min read

Most idle games are about one simple feeling: you buy something, and it keeps paying you back while you watch your numbers climb. The hard part is knowing which purchases actually pay you back. These idle tycoon game tips are built around Broke to Boss, our free story tycoon game, where every step asks you to pick between a flashy trap and a smart hustle. The same ideas work in almost any business sim.
In Broke to Boss, Leo Hart loses his startup to his co-founder Brock and his fiancée Vanessa, and he starts again on a broken mattress he calls Springy. Your job is to turn that mattress into an empire across 30 stages, from Street Survivor to Global Billionaire.
Assets earn, liabilities eat
Every card in the game is either an asset or a liability, and this is the whole lesson of the game.
- Assets make coins every second. A lemonade stand, a delivery bike, a food truck, a car wash and a coffee shop are all assets.
- Liabilities give Status, but they earn nothing and take upkeep every 30 seconds. A supercar on credit, a villa on a loan or a VIP club pass are liabilities.
Each choice shows two cards side by side. The pink Flashy card is the Liability Trap. The green Hustle card is the Smart Hustle. The card lists the cost, the income per second and the upkeep every 30 seconds, so you never have to guess.

A good rule for any idle game: if it does not earn, it costs. Even when a flashy item is cheap to buy, its upkeep keeps coming back every cycle, forever.
Read the card before you tap
It is tempting to tap the shiny picture. Take one second to read the lines on the card instead.
- Income: a plus number per second means the card pays you. Bigger is better.
- Upkeep: a minus number every 30 seconds is a running cost. Compare it with your income.
- Status: Status is nice, and a few late-game partners need it, but it never pays a bill.
- Cost: a lower cost means you can buy the next card sooner.
If a card has no income line and a big red upkeep line, you are looking at a trap. After your first bankruptcy, an Advisor note appears on trap cards to remind you.
Watch your net income, not just your coins
At the top of the screen you see your coins and your net income per second. Net income is what your assets earn minus your upkeep spread over each 30-second cycle. If it turns red, you are losing coins even while you stand still.
- Keep a small buffer of coins for the next upkeep cycle.
- If your net income is red, stop buying flashy items and pick the next Hustle card or level up a business.
- The stage bar shows your net worth: your coins plus the value of your assets. Liabilities do not count, which is one more reason to buy assets.
Use the Shop to level up your best earner
Picking cards is only half of the game. The Shop tab lists everything you own, and each business can be levelled up for more income. Every level costs a bit more than the last, and adds a bit more income, so the first levels are always the best deal.
A simple routine that works well:
- After every new card, check the Shop for a cheap level-up on your best business.
- Level up businesses before houses and vehicles, because businesses usually earn the most.
- Save the bigger upgrades for when you are waiting for the stage target.
Keep your energy up
Leo gets tired. Energy drains slowly over time, and at zero your income is cut in half until you eat. The Food tab has three choices:
- Boiled corn and street burgers are cheap and restore energy.
- Caviar restores a lot of energy and adds Status, but it starts a gourmet habit with its own upkeep every cycle.
Eat cheap food early and often. In most idle games, keeping your income at full speed beats saving a few coins on snacks.
Survive bankruptcy
If your coins hit zero while your upkeep is bigger than your income, the bank takes over. Officer Gruff walks in with a legal paper and hammers SALE signs onto your house and car. If you were dating a glamorous companion, she walks out with an "I'm leaving you!".

You still have choices:
- Wait for the free bailout. After a short countdown, an angel investor saves you and you keep everything.
- Go bankrupt. You lose all your liabilities, keep your assets and restart with 100 coins. Your stage progress stays.
Better still, avoid it: if a trap is eating your coins, open the Shop and sell it for half of what you paid, part ways with a pricey companion or quit the gourmet habit. Each one stops that upkeep at once.
Going bankrupt sounds scary, but it is often the smart move. You keep the things that earn, and you lose only the things that were eating your coins.
Grab the bonuses
A few extra boosts keep the game moving:
- A coin briefcase drops from the sky every 90 seconds. Tap it to collect a bonus, or press Space on a computer.
- Life events pop up in the middle of each stage, like a tax audit, a viral video or a lost briefcase on a bench. They are two-card choices too, and the honest, sensible option usually wins.
- While you are away, your businesses keep earning offline income for up to eight hours.
Follow the story
The best part of Broke to Boss is that every stage moves the story forward with short comic panels. Leo opens a food truck while Brock laughs at him, meets the quirky Pip and the glamorous Ruby, survives a bank crisis and teams up with Maya Stone, a CEO partner who adds income forever. In the corporate act, Leo buys back his stolen company, and later he finds Brock a job that brings the story full circle.
After Stage 30 and the Mars finale, you can expand to New Metropolis. Your coins and purchases reset, but you gain +200% income every time, and the whole story loops again with bigger numbers.
