Space Shooter Tips: Dodge Bullet Patterns, Power Up and Beat Every Boss
Space shooter tips for arcade fans: reading and dodging bullet patterns, where to fly on screen, power-ups, using your bomb and beating boss phases.

A vertical space shooter fills the screen with enemies and glowing shots, and at first it looks impossible to survive. Experienced players aren't dodging faster; they are reading patterns earlier and placing their ship in safer spots. These space shooter tips explain how to dodge bullet patterns, where to fly, how to manage power-ups and how to take apart a boss, using Nova Strike, our free space shooter, as the example.
Watch the bullets, not your ship
The first habit to build is where you look. Your ship is easy to keep track of from the corner of your eye. The danger is in the shots coming towards it.
- Look at the middle of the screen, between the enemies and your ship, where shots are still far away.
- Spot gaps early. Picking a gap while shots are still high on the screen is far easier than squeezing through at the last moment.
- Your hitbox is usually small. In many shooters, including Nova Strike, only a small area near the centre of the ship counts as a hit, so you can often slip between shots that look too close.
Learn the common bullet patterns
Most enemy fire falls into a few families, and the best space shooter tips start with recognising them. Recognising them tells you exactly how to move.
| Pattern | What it looks like | How to dodge |
|---|---|---|
| Aimed shot | Bullets fired straight at your position | Move a little sideways just before they arrive |
| Spread or fan | Several bullets fanning out | Find the gap between two lanes, close to the source where gaps are wide |
| Ring or burst | Bullets in all directions at once | Stay far away; the gaps widen with distance |
| Spiral | Rotating streams | Move slowly in the same direction as the spin |
| Stream | Long, steady line | Step out of the line and stay out |
The tap-dodge trick for aimed shots
Aimed shots target where you are now. Make a small move to the side as they fire, then stop. The whole volley passes by. Big panicky moves often carry you straight into the next shot.

Position: where to fly on screen
- Stay in the lower part of the screen. It gives you the most time to see shots coming.
- Don't hug the very bottom edge. You need a little room to move down as well as sideways.
- Avoid the corners. A corner leaves only one way out.
- Stay roughly under your targets when your guns fire straight up, so your shots keep hitting while you dodge.
- Return to the centre after each dodge, so you can go either way next time.
Power-ups and staying powered
Power-ups in a shooter tend to snowball: more guns clear enemies faster, which means fewer shots on screen and an easier time staying alive.
- Collect weapon upgrades early in a level, when it is safe to chase them.
- Don't die chasing a power-up. If it drifts into a dense pattern, let it go.
- Protect your power level. In many games, including Nova Strike, getting hit costs you a weapon level as well as health, so careful flying keeps your firepower high.
- Shields absorb a hit. Pick them up before a boss whenever possible.
Use your screen-clearing move wisely
Most shooters give you an emergency move, a bomb or blast that clears enemy shots. Two common mistakes are using it too early and never using it at all.
- Hold it for dense moments, such as boss barrages or screens full of shots.
- Use it before you are trapped, not after. A blast that saves a life is worth more than one saved for later.
- Recharge it quickly if the game charges it through play, such as combos or quick kills.
Beating bosses: think in phases
Bosses usually cycle through a set of attacks, and many change pattern as their health drops.
- Watch the first cycle without taking risks. Learn the order of the attacks.
- Find the safe zone for each attack: for spreads, it's between lanes; for rings, it's far away; for spirals, it's moving with the spin.
- Attack during calm moments between patterns.
- Expect new tricks when the health bar drops. Later phases are often faster or add new shot types.
- Keep an eye out for minions the boss launches, and clear them before they add their own bullets.
Applying these space shooter tips in Nova Strike
Nova Strike follows Captain Nova through sectors of alien drones, divers, tanks and spinners, each ending with a cartoon alien commander in a giant mothership. Here is how its real mechanics fit the advice above.
- Flying. Drag anywhere on the screen to fly; the movement is relative, so your finger never covers the ship. On a computer the ship follows the mouse, or you can use the arrow keys or WASD. Your ship fires on its own, so all your focus can go on dodging.
- Shots to dodge. Enemy shots are pink and orange.
- Power-ups. Blue raises your weapon level, up to a five-way spread; green gives a shield that absorbs one hit; pink adds a heart. Getting hit costs a heart and one weapon level.
- Combos and NOVA. Quick kills build a combo and charge the NOVA blast. When it is ready, tap NOVA or press Space to clear every enemy shot and hit every enemy on the screen.
- Motherships. They use spread shots, aimed bursts and drone launches, and later ones add spiral barrages. A bar at the top shows how close the next mothership is.

Stars and Mothership Rush
Clear a sector without getting hit for three stars on the sector map. After your first mothership, Mothership Rush opens: all five commanders back to back against a race clock. Fewer hits earn more stars, and each continue adds 20 seconds to your time, so clean dodging pays off twice.

FAQ
How do you dodge bullets in a space shooter?
Watch the area between the enemies and your ship rather than the ship itself, so you spot gaps early. Make small, controlled moves instead of big swerves: a short sidestep beats an aimed shot, and spreads have wide gaps close to their source. Remember that the hitbox is often smaller than the ship, so you can slip through tighter spaces than it seems.
Where is the safest place to fly in a space shooter?
Usually the lower part of the screen, slightly above the bottom edge and away from the corners. From there you have the most time to react to incoming shots and room to move in any direction. Return towards the centre after each dodge, and stay roughly under your targets so your guns keep firing at them.
When should you use a bomb or screen-clear in a shooter?
Use it when the screen is dense and you are about to be trapped, such as during a boss barrage. Using it a moment too early is better than holding it until you are hit. In Nova Strike, the NOVA blast is charged by quick kills and combos, so it comes back faster if you keep the action going.
How do you beat a boss in a space shooter?
Watch the first cycle of attacks to learn the pattern, then find the safe spot for each one. Attack during the calm moments between patterns and clear any minions the boss launches. Expect new or faster attacks as its health drops. Pick up shields beforehand and save your screen-clearing move for the densest barrages.
What do the power-ups do in Nova Strike?
Nova Strike has three power-ups. Blue raises your weapon level, building up to a five-way spread of shots. Green gives a shield that absorbs one hit. Pink adds an extra heart. Getting hit costs a heart and one weapon level, so dodging carefully keeps your firepower high for the mothership at the end of each sector.
