Chess Citadel is a free chess game you can play online in your browser, with no download or sign-up needed. It follows full chess rules inside a living cartoon citadel, where four named opponents wave hello, think out loud and gasp at your big captures.
Climb the ladder from cheerful Milo (Novice) through Aunt Rosa and Captain Theo to Grandmaster Zara (Hard). Beat each one to unlock the next and earn up to three stars against every opponent. There is also a daily checkmate puzzle, a 12-step Puzzle Path that teaches classic mates, and a two-player mode for a friend on the same device.
Legal-move highlights, hints, undo and a live move list make it friendly for beginners, while the stronger opponents give club players a real game. It runs on phones, tablets and computers. Chess Citadel is an original game made by the GamesYap team. For a quicker strategy duel, try Disc Drop Duel.
Yes. Chess Citadel is free to play in your web browser, and there is nothing to download or install. You get every opponent, the daily puzzle and the Puzzle Path at no cost. Coins only unlock board styles.
Version 2.0.4Nov 2, 2026
2.0.2: Smoother on phones: lighter drawing every frame, less stutter. 2.0.1: Runs smoother on phones: no more sudden freezes, less stutter, and touches are never lost. The points icon now shows where your points go. 2.0.0: Big update: the Puzzle Path, 12 checkmate lessons from the edge-of-the-board mate to two-move rook and queen mates (every one checked by the chess engine), with coins for each first solve; a daily gift, three daily quests, a free daily chest (prize chances shown) and free coins. 1.2.2: Clearer wording: ad rewards give coins only (never points), daily chests show their prize chances, and a few names were made original. 1.2.1: Sharper graphics on phones: the game no longer drops to a low-resolution canvas on slower devices. 1.2.0: Phone-first redesign that fills the whole screen in portrait and landscape. The board is full width with the opponent card above it and your card and thumb-sized buttons (Hint, Undo, Sound, Menu) below. Four named cartoon opponents (Milo, Aunt Rosa, Captain Theo, Grandmaster Zara) react with speech bubbles and moods. There is an opponent picker with unlocks and three stars per opponent, a goal card at the start of every match, and a daily checkmate puzzle that rewards coins. Also new: a next-board-style teaser, a new-best moment, coaching tips, checkmate slow motion with a camera zoom, confetti and a fanfare, and a livelier citadel with banners, torches and birds. 1.1.0: Big visual and comfort update: lit 3D-style pieces and board with five unlockable board styles (coins from wins, cosmetic only), parallax citadel backdrop, move arcs, capture and checkmate animations. New Novice level and a first-game coach, 3 hints per game, take-back retry after a loss, standard result screens, the start break now comes after the first Play tap, compact two-column menu on landscape phones. 1.0.0: First release: full legal chess, computer opponent with three levels (alpha-beta search in a Web Worker), 2-player local, undo, move list.
